Favorite Men’s Golf Shirts For Every Season

Whether in spring, summer, or fall, there’s always time for golf—there’s even time for golf in winter if you live in a warm climate or feel like braving the elements. But playing golf in different seasons requires different apparel. You don’t want to be caught in short sleeves on a cool autumn evening, and you don’t want to sweat through a long-sleeved shirt when playing a round with your boss or a potential client.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite men’s golf shirts. Some of them are perfect for warm, sunny weather; some of them were made to keep you warm when the weather gets cool. Whatever season you find yourself in, there’s a perfect shirt for your next round of golf.

Sleeves In Spring

Spring is a great time to play golf. With the winter behind us, we’re all chomping at the bit to escape the confines of hibernation and get out into the world. If you’re an avid golfer, you’ve probably been waiting for the first nice spring day so that you can hit the course.

But spring can be a fickle friend—warm and sunny one minute, cool and misty the next. With that in mind, it can be a safe play to wear long sleeves to the golf course in the spring. If it gets hot, you can roll those sleeves up; if the sun goes behind the clouds, you’re able to cover up a bit.

While some long-sleeved shirts may feel constraining when it comes time to tee off, there are plenty of options available that are made from incredibly flexible materials—allowing the fabric to move when you do. Here are some of our favorite long-sleeved options for springtime golfing:

The Long Sleeve Athletic Polo

Ideal for occasions in which a collar is preferred (or required), but you don’t want to wear a full button-down or go without sleeves, Willy California’s Long Sleeve Athletic Polo is a perfect golf shirt.

We wanted to be able to wear our Athletic Polo all year round, so we adapted the sleeves to allow for more versatility in cooler months. But that doesn’t mean that this isn’t also a great option for when it gets warm—moisture-wicking technology pulls sweat away from your body and rapidly dries it up, so even if you’re sweating in the sun, you can feel comfortable all day.

And since many golf courses have strict dress codes, we wanted to be sure to provide a collared shirt—a mainstay of many country club dress codes—without sacrificing comfort or style. This polo does it all, allowing you to stay comfortable while also adhering to even the strictest of regulations regarding apparel on the course.

The Standard Long Sleeve Tee

If your golf course has rigid policies around what you’re allowed to wear, you may not be able to bring our Standard Long Sleeve Tee to the fairway. But we didn’t want to go without mentioning it, because it’s an excellent option if you’re allowed to go collarless.

The long-sleeved version of our essential tee, our Standard Long Sleeve Tee is an incredibly versatile piece of clothing. You can wear it almost anywhere—on its own or as a layering piece.

Its cutting-edge fabric blend has both antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties, allowing you to play all day while staying dry (and odor-free). Perhaps more importantly, this material also provides ample protection from harmful UV radiation—essential if you’re playing in the sun.

Summertime Swagger

When it comes to outdoor activities in general, nothing beats the summer. Almost every day is perfect for getting out of the house or the office and spending time in the sun.

On the golf course, the summer weather means that you can simplify. While in more volatile seasons, you need to wear or carry multiple layers just in case, summertime allows you to shed the layers and carry fewer items with you from hole to hole, enabling you to better focus on what’s important: your game.

One of the nicest things about summer styles is the easy comfort of short sleeves. Short sleeves allow your arms to feel the hot sun and the cooling breeze, but more importantly, the absence of extra fabric removes a variable when it comes to range of motion. While long sleeves won’t necessarily get in the way of the perfect backswing, it certainly feels more freeing to swing a club without fabric wrapped around your elbows.

All of the options listed below are made from a top-of-the-line material blend that’s engineered to be antimicrobial and moisture-wicking, while also providing UPF50 protection—making it the perfect material for battling the summer heat.

The Athletic Polo

The short-sleeved counterpart to our Long Sleeve Athletic Polo, our Athletic Polo is a perfect option for guys who want (or need) to wear a collar but prefer the freedom and comfort of short sleeves and the performance capabilities of high-end athletic apparel.

The polo is a classic and versatile style in general: it can be worn casually with shorts or jeans, and it can also be dressed up with a nice pair of slacks and dress shoes. The Athletic Polo has all of those versatile capabilities while also having additional features that set it apart from your garden variety polo shirt.

The Nicer Polo

Similar to The Athletic Polo but designed to be on the dressier side, our Nicer Polo is an excellent choice for a round of golf. Lightweight and breathable enough for demanding physical activity but classy enough for a night out, this is one of our most versatile options available.

The Nicer Tee

While this isn’t an option for every golf course (any course or country club that requires a collared shirt will not let you play in this), The Nicer Tee is our favorite tee—and we’d feel guilty if we didn’t bring it into this conversation. If your course doesn’t require collars, this is a perfect option for a summery round of golf.

Layers For Fall and Winter

As summer gives way to autumn, it can get a little chillier out on the golf course—even more so if you’re relaxing with a drink on the patio at the 19th hole as the sun goes down.

If you live in a warmer climate, maybe you’re able to continue playing into the winter—but it’s likely still going to be much cooler on the course than during the spring or summer.

Meanwhile, for those living in cooler climates, odds are that fall is the last season in which you’ll be able to play golf (snow hazards covering the entire course make for a lot of mulligans, but winter golf is possible), so you’re probably hoping to play as late into the season as possible. That means being prepared with layers—so that you can keep playing even when it starts to cool down.

The Quarter-Zip Pullover

If you’re looking for the perfect top layer to wear over your favorite golf shirt, look no further: our Quarter-Zip Pullover is functional, fashionable, and engineered to be the ideal pullover. Dressier than a sweatshirt yet more laidback than a sweater, there isn’t much that The Quarter-Zip Pullover can’t do.

The Zip-Up Hoodie

We at Willy California love a hooded sweatshirt—the casual nature of them is perfect for leisurely activities. Some country clubs and golf courses disagree with us, outlawing hoodies from the course. Many courses are starting to relax that rule, however, and if you’re a lucky golfer with more clothing options, we highly recommend our Zip-Up Hoodie.

The Zip-Up Hoodie is clean-cut and stylish—but not too snug for comfort and mobility—making it a classy alternative to the standard hooded sweatshirt.

A Golf Shirt For All Seasons

While you may not want to wear a short-sleeved polo in the winter, and the summertime may be too hot for a pullover, there are many options available at Willy California that are perfect for whatever season you find yourself in.

Made from the finest materials and engineered with true versatility in mind, Willy California shirts are some of the best you’ll find—whether on or off the course. But don’t take our word for it.
